Glass pendant lighting adds to the décor and ambience of your home. The lighting comes in many shapes and sizes, which offer a decorative application in addition to their lighting function. These types of fixtures attach to the ceiling by a steel cable or chain and may have shades that are hand-painted or otherwise decorated. Dirt on glass pendant lighting not only decreases brightness but also reduces aesthetic appeal. You should clean your pendant lights before they get too grimy. Follow the simple steps described below in order to clean your glass pendant lighting fixtures.
Step 1 – Take Necessary Precautions
Before doing any kind of work with your glass pendant lighting, you should ensure that the power supply is turned off; otherwise you might get electrocuted. Ask other members that might be living with you not to turn the power on. Make sure that you place the ladder on an even surface in such a way that it becomes easier for you to reach out to the light fixtures. Also wear a pair of gloves during the cleaning process to avoid a possible allergic reaction from the cleaning products.
Step 2 – Dismantle the Glass Pendant Lighting
Different companies assemble glass pendant lights differently. As a result, the method to dismantle them varies considerably. But the most common type of process will follow these steps:
- Take out the electric bulb before you work on shade removal.
- To remove the shade, either use a screwdriver or unclip the holders holding the shade.
Step 3 – Clean the Glass Pendant Lighting
This step depends on how dirty the shade is. In general you should make a mixture of liquid soap and water for cleaning. Soak the glass shade in the mixture for 10 minutes and then remove. If the shade is hand-painted, do not use an abrasive cloth for cleaning or drying. You really shouldn’t use a dishwasher because it may be too strong for the shades and break them.
After soaking the shade, take it out and buff it with a clean rag. You can also use a glass cleaner to do the job. If your pendant light is very grimy, you must use a grease remover, as soap and water do not work well against thick grease. Also use a wet cloth to clean the electric bulb you removed earlier. Wiping it clean should increase its brightness.
Step 4 – Reassemble the Pieces
After drying the shade and bulb, install the shade again. Make sure the ladder is still properly placed and the power is off. After reinstalling the shade and bulb, step away from the pendant light and turn it on. If it doesn’t turn on, make sure that the bulb is fitted correctly in its socket.
